Koki M
29 11 2024Very grateful to have had the experience to spend four summers with my grandfather on his commercial fishing boat as a 12-16 year old up in Haida Gwaii.

My favourites memories include driving the boat up to Haida Gwaii through the inside passage, visiting the small hamlets along the coast like Klemtu and Alert Bay, catching dozens of 20lb springs, eating amazing fresh seafood, seeing baskin sharks, humpback whales and sunfish up close. I also enjoyed spending many days in Old Masset and creating some great friendships.
Looking at these old photos of the Koki M brings a smile to my face as I remember not only my experiences but also my fond memories of my grandfather Toshio Murao who forever will always makes me smile when I think about him and the experiences we had together.
It is for these experiences in Haida Gwaii with my grandfather that I have such a love of fishing, a love of the ocean and the desire to always be kind and compassionate person.

Pyramid Lake and Truckee River RENO Nevada.
19 11 2024Well this marks my second fly fishing trip to Reno. This time Cassidy was joining me and we planned to fish three days on Pyramid and one day on the Truckee River
Day one was with a guide on Pyramid. Cassidy lost two big ones and I landed one and lost a couple. The fly fishing technique on this lake is unique as we were slinging flies with 7wgt rods dangling to flies under an indicator. Similar to our lake fishing except we are fishing from shore. The flies usually consist of midges (chironomids) , balanced leeches and minnow patterns. Apparently the midges are very small so small flies work well, the problem being is that the hooks straighten out on the big fish so fishing with size 12 seemed to be a standard choice. What I didn’t know is that based on our guided experience, fall fishing are bigger but fewer fish and in spring fishing you are more likely to catch smaller but more fish.

Day two we fished pyramid lake and the conditions were poor with bright blue skies and sun. Apparently fishing slows down on nice weather days. We fished around the popcorn hole and Indian head with no luck. I did manage to land a nice Cui fish.

Day three we hit the Truckee floating with a guide. This was a blast as we fished with double dropper rig with a small split on bottom. We each got into 12-15 fish each catching both browns and rainbows. (Caught my first brown!) Highlight was watching a 25 inch plus brown jump beside the boat a couple of times while feeding.

The last day we decided to fish Pyramid again: this time conditions were good and I landed a nice trout and ended up losing two more while Cassidy landed two and lost one. All big fish!
I think I will be coming back a third time asap. Can’t beat staying at a casino while on a fishing trip! I should note I also won at blackjack on the second day….which brought me back even after the first night!

Could not have asked for a better trip. Some big numbers and some big fish. Learned a few more techniques and feeling much more confident fishing Lake Pyramid from shore with indicators. Can’t wait to return!

Used Some Holidays to Enjoy Some Fall Fishing.
28 10 2024Ended up being a gorgeous day so decided to take a holiday and go fishing with my uncle.
Started off slow and the wind and current were not in our favour but after a couple of hours we landed a nice small one.

Shortly after my uncle hooked i to a decent one. During the fight the sturgeon jumped and hit our boat two times which was a first for me!
After a long battle we landed one of the thickest fish I have landed in this area and the fish was about 6 fr long.
Good times.

Stay tuned as I will be taking another day off tomorrow to fish somewhere local!
Weather fishing and fishing pressure was so good I decided to go fishing again. And take a buddy on his first trip.
Had some fresh roe bags and fished the usual spot. Within five minutes we were getting bites and but the end of the day we had hooked into 12 sturgeon.
Good times.

Harrison River
28 10 2024Was at a conference last weekend and went to Sooke to check out the rivers there but ended up fetting hit with the atmospheric river system so that didn’t work for river fishing.
This weekend was in Harrison and went with a buddy to try some chum and coho fishing.
Didn’t see any coho but managed to hook into a good number of chum. I was swinging flies while buddy was tossing spoons.
Fresh chum hit the spoon on a few occasions. and for me the flies that seemed to work were blue black, and chartreuse green Willy buggers.
Great day on the Harrison and kinda wishing we brought the sturgeon gear as the sturgeon fishing seemed to be on fire just around the corner from Kilby park.
Ended the day having dinner ar Sasquatch Park.

Fly fishing for salmon.
14 10 2024Managed to take a day off work and try out the new switch rod I bought in preparation for a Pyramid Lake and Truckee River trip coming up in November:
Although most rivers are closed to targeting chum we hit a local flow in search of coho. Although we didn’t get into any coho we did manage to land a bunch of chum as a by catch. Trust me I did not want to catch these big brutes on my 7wgt!
Nonetheless, the rod, reel and line feels good and I am now ready to hit Reno and try my luck at catching some big browns and Lahotan cutties which are the largest in the world.
Stay tuned.

Fall Camping Trip
14 10 2024Ended the trout season with one last trip to the Cariboo to a favourite lake.
Camping, flyfishing and even wine tasting.
Even though the lake was turning over we still managed to hook into a lot of fish.
