Pyramid Lake and Truckee River RENO Nevada.

19 11 2024

Well this marks my second fly fishing trip to Reno. This time Cassidy was joining me and we planned to fish three days on Pyramid and one day on the Truckee River

Day one was with a guide on Pyramid. Cassidy lost two big ones and I landed one and lost a couple. The fly fishing technique on this lake is unique as we were slinging flies with 7wgt rods dangling to flies under an indicator. Similar to our lake fishing except we are fishing from shore. The flies usually consist of midges (chironomids) , balanced leeches and minnow patterns. Apparently the midges are very small so small flies work well, the problem being is that the hooks straighten out on the big fish so fishing with size 12 seemed to be a standard choice. What I didn’t know is that based on our guided experience, fall fishing are bigger but fewer fish and in spring fishing you are more likely to catch smaller but more fish.

Day two we fished pyramid lake and the conditions were poor with bright blue skies and sun. Apparently fishing slows down on nice weather days. We fished around the popcorn hole and Indian head with no luck. I did manage to land a nice Cui fish.

Day three we hit the Truckee floating with a guide. This was a blast as we fished with double dropper rig with a small split on bottom. We each got into 12-15 fish each catching both browns and rainbows. (Caught my first brown!) Highlight was watching a 25 inch plus brown jump beside the boat a couple of times while feeding.

The last day we decided to fish Pyramid again: this time conditions were good and I landed a nice trout and ended up losing two more while Cassidy landed two and lost one. All big fish!

I think I will be coming back a third time asap. Can’t beat staying at a casino while on a fishing trip! I should note I also won at blackjack on the second day….which brought me back even after the first night!

Could not have asked for a better trip. Some big numbers and some big fish. Learned a few more techniques and feeling much more confident fishing Lake Pyramid from shore with indicators. Can’t wait to return!
